The Roof by Perimeter tool follows rules to eliminate the need for crickets and saddles. Some roof designs need those items, so we must use the Roof by Picking Points tool. In a design that calls for parallel gable roofs, we must create two separate roofs that sit side by side. However, Envisioneer will intuitively merge overlapping roof edges to create one seamless roof, so we must ensure they do not merge.
In our example, a 40’ x 25’ rectangular structure has been created. We will add the parallel gables to this structure.
Let’s first start by understanding the roof properties we will be using. Again, we do not want the edges of the roof to merge, so we must ensure they do not overlap when inserted.
- Select the Roofs button to open the roofs in the catalog, and then double-click on the roof that you will use from the catalog. We will use the 6/12 Slope Hip Roof – Shingles.
- The roof’s properties appear. Here, the overhang is set to 1’-4”. Click Cancel to close the dialog.
Now that we have the overhang value, we can map out exactly where we want the roof lines in our model.
- Type L on your keyboard or select Tools > Layout > Line. This will open the line command.
- Move your cursor over the middle of the top 40’ wall and then left-click to start your line when you see the Circle with an X. Move your mouse down and left again when you are past the lower 40’ wall. Right-click and select Finish. We have now visually separated the design in half using the line.
- Select the line we just added, right-click, and select Offset.
We know the roof edges cannot overlap, and the roof’s overhang is 1’-4”. So, we need to offset this line 1’-4” to the
- Type 1’-4”, then click OK, and then click to the left of the line.
- With the line still selected, right-click again and select Offset.
- This time, the 1’-4” value is still entered, so we just need to select OK and then left-click to the right of the selected line.
- These new lines are going to be our guidelines for our Roof by Picking Points command.
- Select the drop down beside the Roofs button and select Roof by Picking Points or go to Insert > Roofs > Roof by Picking Points.
- Left-click in the top left corner of the wall, move your cursor to the right, snap to the first line, and left-click again.
Follow that line down and left-click in the center of the wall when you see the circle with an X marker.
- Move your cursor to the left and snap to the lower left corner of the wall to finish the first roof.
We have added our first roof to the design, but we need to make it a gable roof.
- Select the roof and then make the upper and lower arrows green to ensure they are the currently selected roof edges.
- Then right click and select Properties.
- In the properties of the roof, adjust the Roof Shape to be Gable.
- Press OK to close the Roof properties dialog and accept the changes.
- Our first gable roof is on one side of the design. Now, we just need to duplicate it on the right side. Select the roof, right-click, and select Duplicate.
- Left-click on the hollow blue grip in the upper left corner where the roof meets the wall. Then, move your cursor over and snap it to the last red line we created.
This now adds the roof over to the model’s right side, creating our Parallel Gable Roof. You can view the model in 3D to better see our roof design.
