When adding an opening to a structural floor, you can customize the framing placement by editing the members. Lengthen, duplicate, or delete them as needed.
In our example design we have a 2” x 12” Structural Floor.
- Select the Structural Floor and then right-click and select Cut Opening.
- We will add a 3’ by 10’ opening into this floor. Select a spot where you want the opening to start, and then type the dimensions to create the opening.
Once the opening has been added, we can see that a single header is created that runs perpendicular to the joists, but there are no framing members along the sides of the opening that run parallel to the joists. Let’s use our editing commands to frame out this opening with members surrounding the opening.
The headers run perpendicular to the joists, but we want to extend them to the next nearest joist and doubled up.
- Select the header and then, using the blue grip, stretch it over to the nearest joist. You can use the member’s snap points to snap it to the edge.
- Do this for both sides of the header on both opening edges.
Now that we have the header set correctly, we can duplicate it to create a double header.
- Select the header and then right-click and select Duplicate.
- Snap to the front edge of the header and then left to specify that point. Move your mouse and snap to the back edge of the duplicated header to create a double header.
- Repeat this for the opposite opening header.
The joists are now running into the new header we added so we will need to stretch the edges of the joist back to snap to the edge of the header.
- Select the joist and then use the blue grips to stretch them back.
Now that the headers are complete, we need to add framing around the edge of the opening.
- Select one of the joists and then right-click and select Duplicate.
NOTE: If you find it hard to move the joist where you want, it is probably because ORTHO is enabled. Press F8 on the keyboard to disable ORTHO and you can then place this joist where you like. I do recommend turning ORTHO back on by pressing F8 again.
- With the new joist added on the side of the opening, use the blue grips to extend or stretch it so it sits on the front edge of the header. Again, use the grips for a snap point.
- Once this joist is added, we can duplicate it on the opposite side to finish our framed opening.
The new framing members are now present around our new opening. However, if we adjust the shape of the floor by moving an edge, the work we have done will be lost due to a setting in the structural floor. If you do not want to lose your edits;
- Select the structural floor and then right-click and select Properties.
- Under the properties, select the Regenerate Components when updated check box. Uncheck this option, and any changes you make to the structural floor shape will not affect the edits you have made to the opening.
