Creating a truly accurate design is all about the details. Adding in Gutters and Downspouts will give you the final detail in both your elevations and your renderings. Visualizing the downspout locations in the elevations will allow you to manage water drainage in your design. Showing the gutters and downspouts in your renderings gives the design a finished detailed look.
Left-click to select the inserted roof, then right-click and select Properties.
In the Roofs dialog box, note the e-Fascia Distance listed in the dialog box, this will be the height to insert gutters. Also note the c – Overhang distance which will be the distance the downspouts must come back to insert against the house. Once you have noted those two values, click OK to exit the Roofs dialog box.
Select Insert>Interiors>Plumbing Fixtures.
Select the Exterior Plumbing Fixtures folder to see the selection of eavestrough and downspout products. Select the Straight Eavestrough Section from the catalog and move your cursor onto the drawing screen area.
At the bottom of the screen, there is a Base Height option. When you insert an element you can specify the distance the element is off of grade. This is where we will use the e-Fascia Distance from the Roof dialog box. The Base Height will take you to the bottom of the gutter, so we subtract the height of the gutter from the e-Fascia Distance value in and then click the TAB key on the keyboard to set that height. Now left click to place that piece of gutter along the middle of one of the roof edge. Once it is inserted, right-click and select Finish.
Double click on the piece of inserted gutter to display its properties. Select the Display button at the bottom of the dialog box.
This gutter element includes the gutter and an endcap on the left and the right. Select the 3D tab and close the eye beside the Right End Cap and the Left End Cap objects. Click OK to exit the Component Display dialog and OK again to exit the Plumbing Fixtures dialog box.
In the catalog panel to the right now select the Outside Corner Eavestrough Section and move your cursor onto the drawing screen area. Again at the bottom of the dialog box the Base Height option will appear. Type the same value from the Straight Eavestrough section and then click TAB.
Left-click to insert the corner near the corner of the roof. Right-click and select Finish. If you need to adjust the positioning of the corner section, left click to select it and then select Move. Move the corner piece so it is tight up against the corner of the roof.
With it still selected, right-click and select Mirror.
The roof edge will need a corner gutter piece on the opposite side as well, a mirrored copy. Left-click to select a center point to mirror the gutter. This could be the ridgeline of the roof, or the midpoint of the wall directly beneath this section. Once selected a line will attach to your cursor indicating the mirror line. Left-click to draw the line to which the corner piece will mirror. A dialog box will appear asking if you want to delete the original, click No.
There are now two corner pieces on either side of the original straight piece. The straight piece can be adjusted in the length so it sits between the two corner pieces properly.
Select Tools>Measure.
Left-click on the inside edge of one of the corner pieces and as you move your cursor a measuring tape will appear and at the bottom of the dialog box in the Commander area it will report the length. Move your cursor to the inside edge of the other piece as you move your cursor on that corner it will show you the length the straight section needs to be. Right-click and select Finish.
Double click on the piece of the inserted straight section of gutter to display its properties. Under the Basic tab the a-Width value is the length of the gutter. Type the value that you measured between the two corner pieces and then click OK.
Repeat this for each side of the roof.
Alternatively, select Insert>Members>Members.
In the catalog panel to the right, select the Gutters folder. Here are a series of different gutter styles. The advantage of these gutter options is that you left-click to insert where they start and stop. They aren’t predefined lengths. These members are also set to miter at corners so as you insert the gutter sections they will automatically miter at corners, so you don’t need the corner pieces. However it will not quantify the corner sections. Members also use the Base Height option upon insertion so it can be inserted at the right height.
The last piece is the downspouts.
Select Insert>Interiors>Plumbing Fixtures.
Select the Exterior Plumbing Fixtures folder to see the selection of eavestrough and downspout products. Select the Rain Down Spout – Tail option and move the cursor onto the drawing screen area. Left-click to insert it up against the fascia. Right-click and select Finish. Once it is inserted if you need to move or rotate it, select the downspout and right-click to see the modification options.
With the downspout selected, right-click, and select Properties.
The a-Width value is equivalent to the overhang value recorded earlier when looking at the properties of the roof. Type in that value and click OK to exit the dialog box.
The downspout is in place and if you need to move it up or down to sit at the correct height, right-click and select Elevate.
